Changes to prescribing at this surgery

We are promoting the use of over the counter medication for selfcare as an alternative to prescribing by your GP. This is because they are available to buy in pharmacies and supermarkets at a much lower cost. Please do not be offended if we ask you to buy these medicines. There are exemptions to these changes - for more information please visit  NHS East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group : eastleicestershireandrutlandccg.nhs.uk

The medications include:    Cough mixtures, Coldsore treatment, Colic drops, Paracetamol and Ibuprofen for simple short term conditions, Antifungal nail treatment, Antacids for indigestion, Antihistamines for hayfever, Medicated shampoo, Sunscreen, Mouthwash and mouth ulcer treatment,Creams, gels and rubs for muscular discomfort, Travel vaccinations, Herbal remedies

It costs the NHS approximately three times more to prescribe these medicines than it does to buy them over the counter.

This is your NHS - please use it wisely.

Non-NHS Services

registrationA number of medical examinations, (which CANNOT be booked on-line), reports including HGV/LGV, taxi and PSV's, insurance forms and certificates are not available on the NHS, but may be provided by the GPs privately for a fee. These may be requested via the receptionist, who will inform you of the relevant charge. While the GPs endeavour to complete requests within 10 working days, clinical work must take priority.

Although some travel vaccinations are available on the NHS, many are not. Patients travelling abroad are advised to complete a travel form (available from Nurses’ Desk), so that the nurse can advise you of any NHS or non-NHS vaccinations you might need. Both types of vaccination are available through our Travel Clinic, although there will be a charge for non-NHS vaccinations.  Malaria tablets are available to purchase from the dispensary.

The practice is a designated Yellow Fever Centre.

Our doctors are unable to provide occupational health services directly with our patients, such as Hepatitis B vaccinations. You may find that your employer’s occupational health department may be able to offer these services in conjunction with ourselves.
